The Impact of Premenstrual Syndrome on Women's Parenting

The Canadian Society for the Investigation of Child Abuse and RESOLVE, Alberta (University of Calgary)

The purpose of this research is to explore connections between the condition of severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) ,mothers’ difficulties with parenting and potential child abuse. Approximately 40% of women have moderate PMS that impacts their daily activities and between 5-7% of women suffer from such severe PMS that it incapacitates their ability to cope with daily life (Pitts, 1987/88; University of Pennsylvania Medical Centre, 1991). Using an initial sample of 40 women, women were interviewed and completed 3 questionnaires. Ethical approval was received from the University of Calgary. The PMS Advisory Committee consists of Dr. Leslie Tutty (RESOLVE Alberta, Lynn Barry, (CSICA); Kendra Nixon (RESOLVE Alberta), Irene Jackson (Grace Women’s Health Centre – Foothills Hospital), Dr. John Pearce (Child Abuse Service – Alberta Children’s Hospital), Fay Hodson, (Research – Calgary Rocky View Child and Family Services), Robbie Babins-Wagner (Calgary Counselling Centre). Funding to date is still being sought. The Gender Institute University of Calgary has contributed $5000 and The Canadian Society for the Investigation of Child Abuse has donated $16,000. On this skeletal budget, the interviewing of women began in November 2002 with funds covering interview time, transcription costs and participant honorariums.

A funding partner is still being sought so that the study of 160 women can be completed. A pilot study on 50 women has been completed and the report is pending.

We are still looking for women who have PMS to participate in our research study through 2007-2008.
