Advanced Forensic Training in the Investigation of Child Abuse
Overview of the Program
The Canadian Society for the Investigation of Child Abuse is committed to
making high quality child abuse investigative training available to all police
and child protection workers, regardless of their proximity to an urban training
center. Specifically, the goal is to develop a competency-based child abuse
training program of modular design which can be offered in a cost-effective,
self-paced and flexible manner using cutting edge educational distance delivery
methods.
* 11 Child Abuse Training Modules at $80 per module
* Each module can be comfortably completed within a 4 week period
* Program offered from September, 2008 to August, 2009
There are 11 training modules consisting of:
* Readings
* Discussion Board Forum Postings regarding specified aspects of investigation; case studies
* Two taped 1 hour online Breeze PowerPoint presentations requiring a submitted response
* Two - 1 hour live Interactive sessions online
* Video clip postings
In addition to the modules, participants will complete:
* Practice “child interviewing” tape submission
* Real case practice “child interviewing” tape submitted for evaluation by multi-disciplinary team
* Class presentation
* Quarterly examinations
Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
* Be exposed to the differences in child abuse investigation practice from participants living in geographic areas across Canada.
* Learn about best practice information in the areas of child abuse typology, investigative roles and mandates, child development and forensic child interviewing, adolescents, the non-offending parent, family dynamics, statement analysis, perpetrator profiles and characteristics; the offender interrogation by police, Internet online child exploitation, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Factitious Illness by Proxy, false allegations and handling the media.
* Demonstrate skills in a practice interview with a child who is not a victim
* Demonstrate skills in a real videotaped victimized child interview (with permission re ethics) which will be evaluated by a multidisciplinary panel
* Evaluate their own practice interviews using an established forensic interview rating form

Technology Required by Participant
Participants will require a computer with Internet and a headset
Certification and Credit
HRMIS approval for RCMP members (pending)
Category A credits for child welfare workers
